According to CalcioMercatoTV, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a move for Leonardo Bonucci.
English football fans will know all about Bonucci. Not only did he score in the final of Euro 2020, he’s been one of Italian football’s best defenders for over a decade.
Despite his advancing years, Bonucci is still an absolute star, and he could be on his way to north London.
Bonucci would be a fantastic rotation option at centre-half, and he would surely jump at the chance to reunite with Antonio Conte.
Indeed, Bonucci worked with Conte at Juventus for a period, and it’s fair to say he was a big fan of the Spurs boss.
Bonucci loved Conte
The defender has gone on the record to praise Conte on numerous occasions.
“What Conte gave me was hunger, the desire to never give in, the mentality that allows you to go beyond pain to reach your objectives,” Bonucci told Sky Italia in 2019.
“He drilled that into us from the first day. Conte was perfect for that Juventus: he needed a chance with a big club and we had to get back to being great after Calciopoli. We needed someone like him, who could make us understand what it meant to wear that jersey.”
The praise doesn’t stop there either. Bonucci also lauded Conte in 2017 when speaking to Ilbianconero.
“I have been coached by some great coaches.”
“Each one of them has given me something but the best one and the manager that has given me the most is Conte.
“I could work every day with him and I have improved as a manager and as a human being. Lippi made me debut with Italy national team.
Easy deal
Given how much Bonucci loves Conte, this should be an easy deal to do.
Fabio Paratici also knows the player well, and this report does state that the player ‘will leave’ in the January window.
Bonucci has already tried playing for another Serie A club with AC Milan, but that didn’t quite work out, so perhaps a Premier League move would appeal to the defender at this point.
This could be a very savvy short-term signing from Spurs as they look to compete for major trophies this season.
