Speaking on Sky Sports News (31/8/21 10:30AM), David James has labelled Kurt Zouma as the best signing West Ham have made this summer.
The French centre-back joined the Hammers towards the back end of the window, and James believes that the London club have pulled off a real coup here.
What’s been said?
James was asked which player he believed was West Ham’s best signing, to which he replied:
“That’s a good question, I think Kurt Zouma was the best signing because West Ham have been scoring goals, as we say, but they’ve conceded goals, and in all three games, as much as they haven’t been beaten, they’ve conceded in every game. As we know, defences are key, they’re not the ultimate decider on whether you win the league or not, because goalscoring usually wins that, and they’re doing that, but they’re conceding too many, so I think Zouma coming in with tighten up the defence, Vlasic will go into that midfield and add some creativity,” James said.

Spot on
We can’t argue with any of the points James has made here.
The Hammers are brilliant going forward, Michail Antonio is the top scorer in the league, Jarrod Bowen is quickly becoming a star, while Said Benrahma is really coming into his own.
However, their defence has left a lot to be desired. Craig Dawson’s powers have waned a little since his lightning start in a claret shirt, while Angelo Ogbonna has a chequered injury record.
Zouma could prove to be the last piece of the puzzle for West Ham as they desperately try to crack the top four this season.
