Alan Shearer told Match of the Day’s Top 10 Podcast that Liverpool’s Champions League comeback against Barcelona at Anfield was ‘the best atmosphere’ he has ever known.

Former Leicester striker Gary Lineker added that Liverpool’s home ground is ‘one of the great places to play’ in English football.

In 2019, Liverpool produced perhaps the greatest night in Anfield history and one of the greatest comebacks in European football when they came from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate.

Nonetheless, when naming the top 10 worst places to go in English football, this is what Lineker and Shearer had to say about Anfield.

“It’s one of the great places to play, isn’t it?” said Lineker. “The atmosphere, especially when you play them on one of them floodlit nights. And when they sing ‘You will never walk alone’, it gives you goosebumps.”

Shearer added: “I always thought about Anfield, and tell me if I am wrong, but I think they are a tad more respectful, the fans towards you as an opposing player than a lot of other grounds.

“I think they give you a bit more respect, whereas on other grounds, especially with me, you got absoutley battered. I think the Scousers are very much like the Geordies and the Glaswegians where they just work hard all week and they want to go and support their teams at the weekend.

“I was lucky enough to be at Anfield when Liverpool beat Barcelona and that comeback. It was the best atmosphere I have ever known at a football stadium. It was ridiculous.”

Well, the Liverpool players desperately need their fans at Anfield now given how they have collapsed without their supporters.

Six Premier League home defeats have followed Liverpool’s unbeaten 68-game run and Aston Villa will be looking to make it seven next month.

But a number of important games need to be played before then, including a trip to Madrid for a mouthwatering Champions League tie.
