It cost Arsenal £850,000 to field Pablo Mari in their Premier League opener on Friday.

The Gunners lost 2-0 away to Brentford in what represented a disastrous start to the season.

It was a rotten result and performance by Arsenal and Mari – who joined permanently from Flamengo last summer – didn’t cover himself in glory.

Even worse, the outing cost the North Londoners a bonus payment of £850,000, which they owed to the Brazilian club once Mari clocked 20 appearances – and Friday was his 20th game.

Here’s how some Gunners fans reacted to this development from Globo in South America:

So far, Arsenal have now paid £7.8 million for the Spanish centre-back and the Brazilian side are owed even more bonus money if and when Mari reaches those milestones.

That being said, he may not play much more football.

When Gabriel Magalhaes returns from injury next month, he’ll slot in alongside £50 million addition Ben White.

And Rob Holding might find himself bumped up the pecking order after Mari’s rather erratic showing against Thomas Frank’s side on Friday.
