Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen points out that Queens Park Rangers defender Rio Ferdinand has not committed a foul in 27 Premier League matches.

Manchester United are struggling for central defenders at the moment and may have missed a trick by letting Rio Ferdinand leave at the end of last season.

The former England international is 35 years of age and is understandably past his best, but he boasts an astonishing stat heading into Sunday’s Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers at White Hart Lane.

‘Here’s an interesting stat for you; it is now 27 PL games since Rio Ferdinand last committed a foul in the PL having again gone unpenalised against Hull on the opening day’, former Liverpool and United striker Michael Owen wrote on Betvictor.com.

It is indeed an astonishing stat, especially when one considers Ferdinand’s age and his lack of regular first-team football last season.

True, Ferdinand was at fault for QPR conceding the only goal of the game against Hull City at Loftus Road last weekend when he was outmuscled by James Chester at the back post, but his overall performance was pretty good.

Of course, sooner or later Ferdinand will commit a foul in the Premier League, but as of now, his record of going 27 league fixtures without being penalised should be lauded.

Whether or not United made a mistake in letting Ferdinand leave, only time will tell – but perhaps the Red Devils could have hang onto the former West Ham United and Leeds United star for one more season.
