Speaking on The Athletic’s YouTube channel, Simon Hughes has shared how the signings of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak will affect the Reds’ summer transfer plans.
The good news is that the signings of Davies and Kabak won’t have too much of an impact on Liverpool’s plans, but that could change depending on how they perform for the remainder of the season.
Indeed, Hughes says that if Davies and Kabak don’t perform well, they could quickly end up being moved on, with Davies joining for just £2m and Kabak only being at Anfield on loan.
If that is the case, Liverpool will proceed as planned with their pursuit of Dayot Upamecano, but of course, if Davies and Kabak perform well, another centre-back signing won’t be necessary.
“Now, if those players don’t turn out to be the players they really want in the long-term, It makes it quite easy for Liverpool to move them (Davies and Kabak) on in the summer and proceed as planned with the long-term pursuits that they’ve had with players like Upamecano is very high on that list.
“Bayern Munich, I think their interest in him has increased in the past couple of weeks, so it will be interesting to see if Liverpool have the pulling power Bayern Munich has.
“The answer is, it doesn’t affect the long-term (transfer plans), which is the beauty of both of the deals, it enhances Liverpool’s chances of getting where they want to be in the short-term, without necessarily pushing them over the edge towards the title, but certainly it won’t affect the club adversely if they at least qualify for the Champions League and equally it allows them to push on with what they wanted to do in the first place.”

This is certainly an interesting update.
The Reds seem to still be keen on Upamecano, and we can understand why, but whether or not they ramp up their interest in him seems to depend on how Davies and Kabak get on.
This certainly adds an extra element of intrigue in Kabak and Davies ahead of their debuts, whenever they may be.
