Speaking on The Overlap, Gary Neville has been speaking about Aston Villa’s appointment of Unai Emery and how the manager is viewed in Spain.
Neville, of course, spent some time at one of Emery’s former clubs, Valencia, and he says that people within the club couldn’t speak highly enough of the ex-Arsenal boss.
Indeed Neville says that anyone who worked with Emery said that he was the absolute best, and he lauded Villa for this appointment, describing it as ‘great’.
Emery’s glowing reviews
Neville spoke about what he heard on Emery while he was in Spain.
“That’s a great appointment. I was in Valencia for four months and I worked with a lot of people at Valencia who worked with Unai Emery and they said he was the absolute best. His record what he did last season at Villarreal, what he did at Sevilla. He outperforms, he punches above his weight and gets the most out of teams when they’re the underdogs,” Neville said.

Steve Bruce, Alex McLeish, Remi Garde, the list is almost endless.
However, now, for the first time in a long time, Villa have a genuinely top-class operator at the helm who has proven himself at the biggest clubs over a long period of time.
Emery wasn’t picked to be the man to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal for no reason, he’s a very well-regarded manager who has the CV and trophy cabinet to back his reputation up.
This is the best appointment Villa have made for a long time.
