Speaking on the Don Robbie YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Tottenham are focused on Paulo Fonseca due to his positive influence on dressing rooms.
It’s no secret that Jose Mourinho was something of a stern taskmaster at Tottenham, falling out with a number of his players, and Spurs now want a gaffer who can form more positive relationships with the squad, and Fonseca is that man.

Romano delivered an update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Fonseca.
“They are negotiating, it is at advanced stages, because he is their favourite in this moment, but it’s not done, I say it’s not done, also Antonio Conte was in a good stage to become the next manager, but then the deal collapsed, so we have to be careful until the last minute,” Romano said.
Romano then spoke a bit more about Spurs’ hunt before returning to speak about Fonseca.
“He was doing a good job at Roma, but not amazing, this season they were struggling. The problem this year was top matches, he was never winning to matches, they were so good against mid-table clubs, but not top clubs,
“For sure, he is a good guy. His best thing is the relationship with the players. He is so good in the dressing room, and after the Mourinho period Tottenham needed someone who was good in the dressing room, and that’s why they’re focused on him.”
Right idea
This is absolutely what Tottenham need right now.
Spurs have learnt that a manager like Jose Mourinho isn’t suited to their squad, so the softer approach may be just what they need.
Players like Gareth Bale, Dele Alli and Serge Aurier seemingly didn’t react well to Mourinho’s heavy-handed approach, so perhaps a manager like Fonseca could be exactly what the doctor ordered in north London.
It remains to be seen how the former Roma boss gets on in this job.
