Speaking to Off the Ball, Ray Parlour has outlined exactly the type of player Arsenal need to sign in January.

The former Gunners midfielder has remarkably said that the Gunners need to sign someone at centre-back who can organise the team and act as a captain.

Despite the fact that the London club’s biggest problems come in the attack, Parlour believes that Arsenal should be in the market for a commanding centre-half in January.

“You look at the skipper Aubameyang, he’s off form at the moment, we know what he can do, he’s a superb player, but I always like someone at the back to be a skipper,” Parlour said.

“I’d highlight someone, maybe someone in Europe, or someone who has been a leader in their team, he might not be great on the ball, but he can organise people, and that’s who I’d look at in January. I think they’re missing someone who is a six or seven out of 10 every week, but he’s a leader.”

It’s certainly an interesting view from Parlour.

Something certainly isn’t right at Arsenal right now, and perhaps what they need this winter is a leader on the pitch to lift everyone else’s game, as they have a good enough squad to be in a better position than 15th.

The Gunners have mainly been linked with creative players in January, but perhaps what they need more is a leader.

Aubameyang isn’t a bad captain by any stretch of the imagination, but rather than being vocally imposing, he usually leads by example, but his form has dipped massively this term, meaning that one of his main qualities as a captain has been taken away.

We’re not saying that Aubameyang should be replaced as skipper, but getting a defender in January who will lead the team in a more traditional way may prove to be a boost for the Gunners.
