Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, Angus Kinnear has outlined his plan for Leeds United, claiming that he wants the Whites to be in a similar situation to Everton in the next few years.

On the surface, being like Everton doesn’t sound all that enthralling, after all, they’ve not won any silverware in a long time and they’re not challenging for top honours.

However, there are worse positions to be in. Everton haven’t been relegated since the inception of the Premier League and they’re often challenging in and around the top six.

“It feels successful because although we had a stretch objective of delivering what we have delivered. The primary one is just to stay up, and while we’ve done so brilliantly it’s easy to forget that most teams go down within two seasons,” Kinnear said when reviewing the season.

“What we need to do with Leeds is to build a platform where that can never happen again, and there are teams who can do that, like Everton.

“You know, outside of the top six Everton have never really been threatened with relegation, and because of our fanbase, the passion of the supporters and the city we’re in, we have a platform to build a commercial foundation that should elevate us over time from ever having to be in that relegation battle. If we can do that we can plan with confidence every season, that’s the vision and we’ve taken an important step this season towards doing it.”

Getting Leeds to Everton’s level would certainly be a great start.

As Kinnear says, the Toffees never really have to worry about relegation and have a great platform to build on.

Of course, things can go wrong on the pitch for a team like Everton, but good times are usually only around the corner and while they’re often in mid-table, every now and then they push for European spots.

There are certainly worse clubs for Leeds to aspire to be similar to.
