West Ham United fans are hoping for something big before the end of the domestic transfer window this evening.
The Hammers haven’t had much luck in the market so far. But multiple outlets claimed that Brentford’s Said Benrahma was on his way to the London Stadium.
The Algerian is one of the best players in the Championship. Benrahma scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions last season, and Irons fans were hugely excited about getting him today.
However, worrying news emerged this morning. The Mirror claimed that the Algerian had failed his medical at West Ham and his £25 million move to East London was in jeopardy.
David Moyes faced the media ahead of his side’s game against Tottenham this weekend. The Irons boss was quizzed about Benrahma and he denied the news about the failed medical, but admitted that he couldn’t guarantee that a deal would be completed by this evening’s deadline.
Moyes: Benrahma hasn’t failed his medical
He told Football London (13:51): “That’s not correct [news about Benrahma failing a medical]. We are still hopeful something can be done later today but I can’t guarantee that. Part of his medical is ongoing.”
West Ham only have a few hours left to complete the deal. The Irons desperately need this move to go through to keep the fans appeased after a few questionable decisions by the board this summer. Most notably, the sale of Grady Diangana to West Brom.
If Benrahma’s move collapses, West Ham will be left with very little time to find a replacement. Failure to sign at least one more player before the deadline will increase the frustration around the club; something that could play a part in their upcoming games.
That would be terrible for the Hammers. Moyes’ men have been in good form after their torrid summer. The Irons scored four past Wolves and three past Leicester without conceded a single goal against the two sides.
Their next game is a London derby against Spurs, which will not be easy. Completion of Benrahma’s deal could give them a big boost ahead of the clash on Sunday, but failure to sign him could do the exact opposite.
