Thierry Henry was left annoyed after Alexis Sanchez was sent off during Liverpool’s second-leg Champions League tie against Inter Milan on Tuesday night at Anfield.

The former striker made it clear that it was ‘never’ a second yellow card for the ex-Arsenal man, as he told CBS Sports (08/03/22 at 10:05 pm).

Even though Inter picked up a 1-0 win in the second leg, Liverpool still progressed through to the next round after winning the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

It was a tough evening for Jurgen Klopp’s side and they would have been fearing the worst when Lautaro Martinez fired home just after the hour mark.

But, two minutes later, Sanchez was sent for an early bath for his tackle on Fabinho and it’s something that didn’t sit well with Henry.

“I want to talk about the second yellow of Sanchez,” said Henry. “If you have played football, you know that’s never a yellow.

“The first one (on Thiago), with the new rules that we have seen, is late. Way late. Foot on the knee. I could have maybe understood if it could have been an orange-red.

“But that second yellow, if you have played football. What is he supposed to do?

“Obviously, your foot is going to go up because you are kicking the ball away. We have seen the play here. Full speed. You don’t have time to take your leg away by kicking the ball, it’s impossible.”

In truth, that controversial moment did kill Inter’s momentum because things were getting very nervy for the Reds.

The Merseyside giants still deserved to go through because, over the two legs, they were the better side.

Whilst the six-time champions didn’t score last night, they will question how they didn’t because they hit the woodwork on a number of occasions.

Either way, yesterday’s result is probably more of a relief for Liverpool, as they will now turn their attention back to Premier League matters.
