Darren Bent has said on talkSPORT (4:26pm, November 5, 2021) that Philippe Coutinho joining Newcastle from Barcelona would be massive for the St. James’ Park outfit.

The former Sunderland striker believes that bringing in Coutinho would be a statement of intent for Newcastle’s new owners.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) reportedly want to sign the former Liverpool attacking midfielder.

Sport reported last month that Newcastle could reignite their interest in the 29-year-old.

PIF reportedly wanted to sign Coutinho before the takeover was finalised.

Bent said on talkSPORT (4:26pm, November 5, 2021): “I genuinely just think that Newcastle need good players in the team. I think Coutinho, he is almost like last-chance saloon.

“He has gone to Barcelona, hasn’t worked out for him. He went to Bayern. That didn’t really work.

“If he goes to Newcastle, imagine Coutinho coming through the door at Newcastle, that’s massive.”

Statement signing for Newcastle United

In our view, Bent is right about Coutinho and Newcastle.

The Brazil international joining the Magpies would be a massive signing for the Premier League.

We know how good Coutinho, who can also play as a winger, was at Liverpool.

Yes, things have not been great for Coutinho since he left Liverpool, but he is still only 29.

The big question for Newcastle is whether Coutinho would want to move to a team who are struggling for survival in the Premier League.

In football, anything and everything is possible.
