Rangers fans have taken to Twitter in delight after the club announced that Leon Balogun had signed a new contract.

The 31-cap Nigeria international has penned a new one-year extension that will keep him at Ibrox until the summer of 2022.

It is a reward for his fine performances in Glasgow, after Steven Gerrard signed him on a free transfer following his exit from Wigan Athletic.

The 32-year-old has made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Gers this season, playing a role in the club’s historic 55th title.

He may not have arrived to much fanfare, although the replies below tell you that he has won the hearts of the Ibrox faithful this season.

Balogun offers Gerrard an option in two different roles.

The former Brighton man primarily operates at centre-back, although he can be deployed at right-back, where he has played four times this term.

Some supporters might argue against that, following a shaky display at right-back against Slavia Prague.

However, Balogun deserves to avoid criticism for that display, based on the quality of the opposition and the fact it’s not his main position.

With so many international caps, and plenty of domestic experience at 32, it was a no brainer to tie the Berlin-born defender down to fresh terms.

Let’s see what the Rangers fans on Twitter have been saying about the club’s announcement
