‘That’s his job’: Bent slams Mourinho and questions Amazon documentary after Tottenham defeat

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has been speaking to TalkSport about Spurs’ opening day defeat to Everton.

Jose Mourinho’s side looked second best on Sunday in a performance that had Spurs fans scratching their heads. Spurs were lucky to come away with just a one-goal defeat as the scoreline could have been a lot worse if Richarlison had his shooting boots on.

When the Tottenham boss was asked about the reason behind his side’s dismal performance, Mourinho claimed it was because many of his players had participated in just one or two training sessions due to last week’s international games, which meant they weren’t physically ready (Football London).

Bent wasn’t too happy with the Spurs boss’ post-match comments. The former Tottenham man claimed Mourinho was already under pressure, while he felt things were a lot different behind the scenes than those shown on Amazon’s All Or Nothing documentary.

He said: ‘I think Mourinho is under pressure. Whose fault is it when he talks about intensity and many of the players lacking physical conditioning? Surely he’s got to take some of the blame for that? That’s his job.

“When he says ‘oh, they lacked physical condition’, everybody is, unfortunately, in the same boat because no one has had a pre-season.

“What I saw from the documentary, it looks all positive, the relationship between Mourinho and the players and they are all pulling in the same direction. That performance yesterday shows me that what they’re showing in this documentary doesn’t quite line up.

“Seeing that performance yesterday, I would say they are a long way off where they want to be.”

Tottenham’s performance on Sunday was arguably their worst under Mourinho, especially in the second half. The former Chelsea boss will have to pick his side up quickly as Spurs have no time to waste. The north Londoners travel to Bulgaria to face Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the qualifying stage of the Europa League on Thursday.

Mourinho’s post-match talk in the dressing room on Sunday would have been interesting to watch but, with Amazon now gone, whatever was said will stay between him and his players.
