Mehrdad Ghodoussi has confirmed that the Alan Shearer statue is being relocated to Newcastle United property.
Shearer is Newcastle’s most prolific goalscorer of all time after netting a whopping 260 goals for his boyhood club throughout 14 seasons.
In 2016, the legendary hitman was honoured by having his very own statue erected but it remains just on the outskirts of St James’s Park.
According to The Chronicle, this is related to a falling out with United’s former owner Mike Ashley.
However, Ghodoussi, who is one of the prominent figures to take over from Ashley on Tyneside, along with Saudi Public Investment Fund, has confirmed to The Athletic that the Shearer shrine will be now moved to stand directly beside the Sir Bobby Robson statue, within the confines of St James’s Park.
He said: “Alan’s statue is moving, that’s happening, getting his spot right next to Sir Bobby and Nine Bar will be turned into Shearer’s again. We want our ex-players to play a role, to be ambassadors for the club.”
Brilliant
Ghodoussi and wife Amanda Staveley are already massively popular figures among Newcastle supporters.
And this, when it materialises, will further bridge the gap between the fanbase and the upper echelons of the Magpies’ hierarchy.
Under Ashley, there was an enormous divide between the terraces the boardroom and gestures like this, honouring bonafide icons like Shearer, is certain to consolidate the ever-increasing goodwill that Newcastle’s new custodians are building.
