Jamie O’Hara has reacted to Arsenal handing Eddie Nketiah a new contract and the famous number 14 shirt, which he thinks is ‘great for Tottenham’, as he told talkSPORT on Monday morning.

The Hale-End star recently signed a new long-term contract in north London, with Thierry Henry’s famous shirt now being donned by the Arsenal 23-year-old, but O’Hara feels it’s a ‘disrespect’.

Arsenal are searching for that all-important goalscorer going into the 2022/23 Premier League season, after that area of the field cost them Champions League football last season with Antonio Conte’s Tottenham pipping them to fourth spot.

Nketiah is one of the names that will be tasked to provide the goals for Mikel Arteta’s side next season, with both Arsenal and Spurs pushing for Gabriel Jesus’ signature this summer.

Nonetheless, with Nketiah signing a new contract and being handed the number 14 shirt, this is what ex-Spurs midfielder, O’Hara, made of it all.

“I think if we (Spurs) win a trophy, if we just win a trophy, no matter what it is, just win a trophy,” said O’Hara. “It’s a great achievement (finishing top four) and he (Conte) has done unbelievably well to get there in the end.

“And to pip Arsenal as well, which killed them. Let’s not get started on Arsenal. Number 14 shirt to Nketiah. Oh wow! What are they doing there? That’s embarrassing. They have Thierry Henry’s shirt to Nketiah.

“It’s almost a disrespect. I think the shirt is too big for him. I don’t think he is good enough. Hopefully, he proves me wrong – it’s great for Spurs.”

NKETIAH’S NEW CONTRACT DIVIDES OPINION

Nketiah scored five Premier League goals last season, with all of those goals being scored from April and beyond.

For large parts of the campaign, the former Leeds loanee struggled for form and game time in north London, hence why his new contract has divided opinion.

Highbury legend Ian Wright has publicly come out and defended Nketiah’s new contract and those who have questioned Arsenal’s call.

Either way, come next season, there is going to be big pressure on his shoulders because this is where many will be expecting the player to take his game to the next level.
