Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that plans to extend the Anfield Road Stand will go ahead.
What’s the story?
Well, Anfield is about to get a little bit bigger.
Liverpool’s announcement states that 7,000 seats will be added to the Anfield Road Stand, taking the total attendance to 61,000.
Furthermore, it is expected to create 400 new jobs on matchday, to add to the 2,200 people already employed by the Reds at each home game.
The new design will see the lower tier refurbished, with a new upper tier built above it.
It is expected to be ready in time for the 2023/24 campaign.
It will also mean Liverpool can boast the third-biggest stadium in the Premier League, behind Old Trafford and Tottenham’s new ground.
Manchester United can house 74,140 fans, whereas Spurs can hold 62,303.
Liverpool redeveloping Anfield is great to see
Stadiums are pieces of history, and if clubs want to increase their capacity, this is the way to go.
Knocking down stadiums is criminal, and we’d much rather see clubs copy Liverpool than do something similar to West Ham.
The Irons bulldozed Upton Park to the ground, and now reside in a soulless bowl which severely lacks atmosphere and character.
It devastated supporters, and understandably so.
Fans can spend years of their lives travelling to one stadium, making friends inside and outside the ground as well as many memories along to way.
A stadium means more than just a building to supporters, and it’s imperative that existing grounds are added to, rather than destroyed.
