Jon Newsome has criticised Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier for one of the goals that he conceded against Bournemouth away from home in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The former Leeds defender has said on BBC Radio Leeds (2:24pm, April 30, 2023) that Meslier was “really poor” for the second goal that Bournemouth scored against Leeds.

The 23-year-old French goalkeeper failed to collect the ball from a corner, and Jefferson Lerma slammed home from close range.

Bournemouth went on to win the Premier League game 4-1, as Leeds remain in serious danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Newsome said: “That’s awful, dare I say, from the keeper, Meslier, that’s really, really poor.”

HITC Verdict: Very disappointing

In our view, Illan Meslier needs to step up his game and has to stop making the kind of mistakes that he is making for Leeds United at the moment.

There was no reason whatsoever for the Frenchman to drop the ball from the corner the way he did.

It was easy enough for any Premier League-level goalkeeper.

Meslier had a poor game against Fulham as well, and it is becoming a real problem that the Leeds goalkeeper cannot be relied upon to do the simplest of things.
