Gary Neville has changed his mind about Liverpool finishing below Manchester United this season, as he told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
In August, the Sky pundit stated that Man United will finish third and Liverpool fourth in the Premier League table, but he admitted last night ‘that will be wrong’.
A lot has changed since those predictions were made, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being removed from the wheel at Old Trafford after a quite dismal start to the campaign, including being thumped by five at the hands of their bitter rivals.
Initially, Neville backed the current leaders, Manchester City, to win the Premier League title – and he sticks by that call.
He then backed the current European champions in Chelsea to finish in second place – and once again, he backs that to still happen.
And heading into the New Year, it’s looking unlikely that Ralf Rangnick’s men, who are 13 points behind the Reds having played a game less, will close that gap.
This is what Neville had to say when his predictions about the top four were brought up from August.
“The top one I am alright with (backing Manchester City to win the PL title),” said Neville.
“The second one (Chelsea), I think Liverpool, you can swap them with Manchester United. That will be wrong.”
Ten games in, a four-way Premier League title race turned into a three-way race and many are now questioning whether it will now turn into a two-way fight or just one team going it alone.
Chelsea are six points behind the leaders, the same as Liverpool, but they have a game in hand on Pep Guardiola’s men.
But things could become messy for either Chelsea or Liverpool this week because they will face-off at Stamford Bridge on Sunday – before their midweek matches.
Either, both teams drop points, which suits Manchester City the best, or the other suffers a defeat and makes life difficult for themselves in the race for the title.
