Remember Lewis Holtby? The man who joined Tottenham in January 2013 has been speaking to SHZ about his time in the Premier League.

Interestingly, he reveals he came close to securing a dream move to Everton in 2014.

What’s the story?

Well, after just one season at Tottenham, Holtby admits he came very close to joining Everton in 2014, a move he describes as a dream.

The 31-year-old told SHZ: “I came close once – in 2014, but for various reasons, the transfer didn’t happen. That would’ve been cool. Everton is my childhood sweetheart, my number one. The club my father and I supported.

“But I had the honour of playing there with Tottenham in my career. That was a great experience.”

So, while Holtby was turning up at Hotspur Way every day, he was clearly holding out hope of a switch to Everton.

You can see why Spurs nearly sold the 3-cap Germany international after just one season.

Holtby scored just three goals in 42 games for Tottenham, and failed to transmit his impressive form in Germany over to the Premier League.

Eventually, he left Spurs for Hamburger SV in 2015.

Tottenham form suggests Everton didn’t miss out on much

As good as Holtby was in Germany, he struggled hugely in the Premier League, and it’s safe to say Everton didn’t miss out on much.

During a loan spell at Fulham in 2014, the attacking midfielder scored just one goal in 13 appearances, proving that his underwhelming displays were not only Tottenham’s fault.

The German even made a move to Blackburn in 2019, but still couldn’t make his mark on English football, even in the Championship.

He netted just four goals in 56 games at Ewood Park.

Holtby now finds himself at Holstein Kiel, who play their football in the Bundesliga 2, Germany’s second tier.

Had he taken his opportunities in the Premier League, who knows how Holtby’s career would’ve turned out.
