That wouldn’t have happened at Arsenal! Higuain slips, hits rocks, needs 10 stitches

Gonzalo Higuain – linked with Arsenal earlier this summer, has been hospitalised after a freak accident in Italy.

Footballers are sadly not immune to freak accidents suffered by mere mortals.

Many will remember the story of Santiago Canizares missing the 2002 World Cup due to dropping a bottle of aftershave, breaking his foot.

Or the tale of David Batty’s foot being run over by his kid’s tricycle, delaying the recovery from an ankle ligament injury.

Now the illustrious name of Gonzalo Higuain can be added into the ‘hall of misfortune’, having suffered his own unusual injury – which has landed him in hospital.

Having recently joined Napoli, he was visiting the Italian island of Capri on a day off, when disaster struck.

The usually quick-footed striker, lost his standing entirely, slipping and landing face first on a rock. Ouch.

He was taken to hospital and required 10 stitches around his jaw.

Dr. Mauro Ingrosso from the Capilupi medical centre, according to reports in the Italian media, said: “He’s in great condition and he’ll already be able to leave the hospital today”

“However, I don’t know if (Spanish coach Rafa) Benítez will use him this coming Saturday in the (league) game against Verona.”

A headache Benitez, and Higuain obviously, really could have done without.

What is the most unusual injury you can remember a footballer suffering?
