Alan Shearer has claimed ‘that would do for starters’ after 11 players were read out to him that have been linked with Newcastle since their takeover, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

The likes of PSG duo Adrien Rabiot and Mauro Icardi were mentioned, alongside the likes of Raheem Sterling, Aaron Ramsey and Jesse Lingard.

All of that is a pipe dream for Newcastle fans, at this moment in time, because they have to get their own house in order first and climb up the table.

But the hope is that, during these coming years, they are on a platform where they can compete to sign these superstar players and add some of the best talents in Europe to their ranks.

Of course, the recently-arrived Newcastle owners can go down a route where they go all-in from the get-go and try to lure such names straight away.

Afterall, they have the money to do so and more.

Nonetheless, BBC pundit Statman Dave reeled off the names to Shearer that have been linked with the club and he issued a simple response.

“I have made an XI of players that have been linked with Newcastle since the takeover and I would like Alan’s opinion on this,” said Statman Dave.

“So, you have Dean Henderson in goal. Maehle, the Danish right-back. Koulibaly. Tarkowski. Gosens, the left-winger from Germany.

“Rabiot. Aaron Ramsey. Sterling. Lingard and Coutinho, with Icardi up front. Now, that team isn’t going to get relegated and maybe a few of them would help Newcastle.”

Shearer responded: “That would do for starters, thank you very much.”

Newcastle need to put the pieces in place before the players can come in, whatever direction the club decides to go down.

Adding individuals into the board room, such as a Sporting Director, will be a start, but it will be interesting to see how long Steve Bruce lasts before he is sacked.

The new appointment is going to be the most important part of the jigsaw because if the Magpies can get that right then they can really motor.

But, until then, it’s a case of stabilising themselves in the Premier League and ensuring they are the richest club in England’s top-flight and not in the Championship.
