Trent Alexander-Arnold has said that a team meeting in mid-March was the catalyst for Liverpool’s turn in fortunes last season.
Speaking to the Athletic, the 22-year-old England international revealed that the squad and Jurgen Klopp took a different approach in addressing the problems that plagued the side last campaign.
The Reds went through a spell where they lost multiple home games in a row after going three years undefeated at Anfield in the Premier League.
At the time, Liverpool had Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson out injured. Alexander-Arnold was also out for some matches during this period.
Indeed, it was arguably the worst period Klopp has experienced during his tenure as Liverpool manager. But Alexander-Arnold believes that a team meeting was the turning point that put the Reds back on the right direction.
Alexander-Arnold: ‘That was the turning point”
The defender said: “Up until that point it was, like, ‘Aaargh, we’re not winning because of this, because of that; Virg is injured, Joe’s injured, Joel (Matip) is injured, Hendo’s injured’.

“Then, we said, ‘Right, we’re not getting them back now. We can only work with what we’ve got here, we’ve got to make it work.’”
Alexander-Arnold added with: “That was a turning point for us. Realising we were not going to get any help from anyone else, realising we weren’t going to get every decision go our way; thinking everything was against us while also thinking we’re still good enough to pull through.”

Evidently, the talk worked. Liverpool managed to finish third in the Premier League table. And with Van Dijk, Gomez and Henderson all back from injury, there is a good chance that the Reds could now challenge for the title with the squad mostly fit.
