Troy Deeney told TalkSport Breakfast (09/11/20 at 6:10 am) that Aston Villa are ‘turning into that team from the 80s’.

The boyhood Birmingham City fan also backed Villa for a potential top 10 finish this season and labelled manager Dean Smith as a ‘top man’.

It has been some start for Villa, who are currently sitting in the top-six, and if they win their game in hand then they would shoot to the top of the Premier League table.

On Sunday, Villa thumped Arsenal 3-0 and Watford striker Deeney shared his honest thoughts on the Midlands giants.

“It was an awkward one with Arsenal vs Villa,” said Deeney. “Villa are doing very, very well and obviously naturally I am a Birmingham City fan.

On who he wanted to win: “Just to wind you up [presenter and Arsenal fan Laura Woods] I wanted Villa to win, but Aston Villa are turning into that team from the 80s’. They are looking like a top 10 team now, aren’t they!? Let’s be honest.

“I know Dean from when I was at Walsall, he was like youth team manager there. He’s a top man. John Terry is there as well. Shaky [Craig Shakespeare], who was with us and Nigel [Pearson].”

The key thing for Villa is to keep their feet on the ground, and like their defeats to Leeds and Southampton, it’s a case of not getting too down when they lose and don’t get too high when they win.

One thing is for sure, Villa are a completely different team from the one that survived relegation during the final few minutes of last season.

A big reason behind that is the players are now used to each other, more experienced, players are improving under Dean Smith and the new summer signings have also taken them to another level.
