Some Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to give their reaction to Garth Crooks’s comments on striker Callum Wilson.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion forward Crooks has included Wilson in his BBC Premier League Team of the Week.

The 28-year-old striker scored both goals in Newcastle’s 2-1 win against Everton at St. James’ Park in the league at the weekend.

The England international’s opening goal in the 56th minute was a penalty, and he added to the tally with his second on 84 minutes.

What Crooks wrote about Wilson is very bizarre. The BBC pundit’s claim that the Englishman has been a “slow burner” in comparison to Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has not gone down well with some Newcastle fans, as shown below on Twitter.

Crooks wrote on BBC Sport: “I’m not sure what’s going on at Everton at the moment. They started the season as if they had a point to prove and they probably did. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has made it clear he can play in this league, and James Rodriguez’s ability was never in doubt. While their performance against Newcastle was marginally better than their shocker at Southampton, they still look off the pace.

“Meanwhile, Callum Wilson’s arrival at St James’ Park has been a slow burner in comparison but has given Newcastle a cutting edge, especially at home. Wilson’s craftiness to draw a penalty from Everton’s Andre Gomes was astute and so was the conversion.”

Wilson joined Newcastle from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020 and has hit the ground running.

According to WhoScored, the 28-year-old has scored six goals and provided one assist in seven Premier League matches for the Magpies.

Calvert-Lewin has scored eight goals in seven league matches for the Toffees, according to WhoScored.
