Prospective Manchester United buyer Thomas Zilliacus has played down any notion of him purchasing rivals Liverpool.

United’s ownership race has become something of a soap opera in recent weeks.

All of the attention has been on the Qatari bid and then the project put forward by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Then there is Zilliacus, who has emerged from nowhere as an apparent contender for the Red Devils.

Zilliacus, 59, is a Finnish businessman who previous served as chairman of HJK Helsinki.

Zilliacus has entered the race for United late, and has indicated that he would want Red Devils fans to have 50% of the club if they chip in cash.

The communications mogul has suggested that fans would only need to chip in the price of a ‘cup of coffee’ when speaking to Ben Jacobs.

Zilliacus also set tongues wagging by suggesting to Jacobs that he would look at other football clubs if he can’t be United – and noted that his brother is a big Liverpool fan, refusing to rule out buying the Reds.

That suggestion has grown arms and legs in recent days with rumours linking Zilliacus with Liverpool.

Thomas Zilliacus plays down Liverpool suggestions

Zilliacus is now walking back on the Liverpool suggestions by suggesting he isn’t interested in the club at all.

The Finn has taken to Twitter to claim that any interest from him in Liverpool is ‘incorrect’.

Zilliacus claims he has been a United fan since he was a child and his full focus is on buying them rather than Liverpool.

It seems unlikely that Zilliacus will win the battle for United, and a move to buy Liverpool would be a surprise now too.

It’s unclear just how much Zilliacus is actually worth and that means there are questions over whether he can actually buy a huge club like Liverpool or United.

Either way, Liverpool fan seemingly don’t need to think too much about Zilliacus taking over the club any time soon.
