Alex Crook has told talkSPORT that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are real “contenders” for Darwin Nunez, but he has added that there is “genuine interest” from Manchester United as well in the Benfica striker.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has said that he was sent a text message from a trustworthy source last week about Liverpool being keen on signing the Benfica striker in the summer transfer window.

Crook told talkSPORT: “We spoke about Liverpool earlier, about Sadio Mane and would they replace him.

“Darwin Nunez, there is genuine interest from Manchester United, but a deal for him is not as close as has been suggested in the Portuguese media.

“I received a text message from a trustworthy source on Friday that Liverpool are genuinely contenders for him.”

Encouraging for Liverpool

In our view, Alex Crook’s claim about Liverpool and Darwin Nunez is very encouraging for the Reds.

Crook has extensive contacts in the football industry and is the transfer insider for talkSPORT.

The Independent reported last week about Liverpool being keen on Nunez, so another English source backing up that claim means that things could happen.

Sadio Mane wants to leave Liverpool this summer, and Klopp will need to sign a replacement for the Senegal international forward.

Nunez is a goal machine who has Champions League experience, and he could be the number nine for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz could play alongside him in attack.

Nunez scored 26 goals and gave four assists in the Portuguese league and scored six goals in the Champions League this past season.
