West Ham United’s under-23 coach Terry Westley has been speaking to the club’s official website following his side’s 2-1 victory against Sunderland on Sunday.

The young Hammers won courtesy of strikes from Toni Martinez and Martin Samuelsen and the former received special praise from his coach after making it 18 goals in just 20 appearances at that level since moving to the London Stadium.

That is an outstanding record and the Spanish forward will surely be granted his first-team debut at West Ham sooner rather than later, especially when you consider he also impressed during a loan spell at Oxford United last season.

Speaking to whufc.com after the Sunderland match, Westley said of Martinez, “I think today was his best game for us. That’s the best game with and without the ball.

“He was a constant threat. They had to take the centre-half off at half time because Martinez just had too much for him.”

That is some praise from the West Ham coach, and the fact that Sunderland were forced into a defensive reshuffle as a direct result of Martinez’s performance speaks volumes about his ability up front.

For now the 20-year-old has to be patient, knowing that if he keeps scoring for fun with the second string he senior chance will come in time, even with the presence of Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez.

West Ham have another goal-scoring gem on their hands, and it will be interesting watching his career develop in the years ahead.
