Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Terry Venables has urged his old side to hand Harry Kane a new contract before it is too late in his Daily Mail column – with Real Madrid repeatedly linked with a move for the in-form striker.

Kane, 24, reached another landmark on Sunday afternoon by scoring a last-gasp equaliser against Liverpool to earn a 2-2 draw at Anfield, marking a century of Premier League goals for the north Londoners in all competitions.

Spurs’ number 10 had earlier missed a penalty to put Spurs 2-1 ahead, before Mo Salah notched his second of the match with a fine solo effort in injury time. But Kane made no mistake the second time around.

The Daily Mail claimed last month that Spurs are ready to hand Kane a new bumper contract that increases his current wage from £110,000 a week to £200,000, and Venables believes a deal must be done sooner rather than later.

“Now, with market forces, Harry is being talked about as a £200m signing,” Venables said. “The fact that Real Madrid need more firepower to match Barcelona’s surge means the world’s top goalscorers will be targets.

“Spurs may have a fight on their hands. I hope Harry stays here. We don’t want another of our Premier League talents being lured by Spain’s big two.

“Spurs will have to match his ambition and they will also need to move quickly with a contract offer, especially with some of the money being thrown around. You can’t ask Harry to settle for less. Not for a player of his class.”

Kane, who is England’s obvious contender to lead the attack in Russia at this summer’s World Cup, has now amassed a huge 31 goals in just 32 league and cup encounters this season.

He has four and a half years remaining on his current deal but it remains to be seen if he will stay with Spurs this summer with Real Madrid potentially set to test the north Londoners’ resolve.
