Glasgow Rangers forward Joe Dodoo is enjoying a great spell away from Ibrox.
The Gers ace has enjoyed an excellent spell on loan, having scored four goals in his previous four appearances. It would have surprised Blackpool fans therefore, when he was left on the bench for the League One clash with Doncaster.
The decision would seemingly backfire as Donny claimed a 2-0 win. Dodoo was brought on with 25 minutes remaining when the score was 1-0, but he was unable to change the game.
And after the full-time whistle, McPhillips conceded that he made the wrong call by deciding to rest the Rangers loanee.
“Were they the correct changes? Maybe not. They’re great when it works out but it probably hasn’t for us here. But we’ll have to put it to bed and concentrate on Friday. You look at the shifts Joe has put in but with hindsight maybe he should have started.
“He was fit. We were just looking after him with all the games but obviously that never paid off for us.”
It says a lot about how far Dodoo has come in recent weeks that the Blackpool boss is now kicking himself for leaving him out of the starting lineup.
There was a period when the 23-year-old could seemingly not get a game with the third tier side. But he has certainly turned his situation around this month with a handful of goals – including a couple of stunning finishes – and some very bright play in other areas.
Dodoo probably has a long way to go before he is forcing his way into Steven Gerrard’s plans at Ibrox, but he is unquestionably in a significantly better position to the one he found himself in between September and the end of October when he barely featured.
