Glasgow Rangers are currently right in the mix in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.
Rangers legend Terry Butcher sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Record, and shared how his former club must target at least one victory over Celtic this season.
Butcher questioned whether finishing second to the Hoops would constitute a successful season for the Gers, however.
Celtic currently sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, two points clear of Rangers, but there is still a long way to go this season.
Both sides face an incredibly busy schedule over the next month or so, with nine domestic games each to come between now and the three-week winter break at the end of December.
Butcher sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Record, and shared something that Rangers must do this season, if they are to enjoy a successful campaign in comparison to Celtic:
“I’m looking at Rangers and asking if there is one game where they can beat Celtic this season. I would set that as a target for the Rangers players. The next one against Celtic will always be the target whether it’s in the league or cup. It’s about trying to get a result like that when it really matters against Celtic. They still have to beat the rest of the league as well of course. What would qualify as success at Rangers, finishing second to Celtic? Some people would say that is success in the current circumstances but Rangers fans certainly want more than that and I’m sure Stevie wants more than that. He doesn’t want to finish second. He wants to finish first.”
A second place finish and victory over Celtic at least once would surely be considered as a fine effort from Steven Gerrard in his first season in charge of Rangers, but only time will tell if the Glasgow giants have what it takes to meet the challenge laid out by Butcher.
