Terry Butcher has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers defender Lee Wallace still has a future at Ibrox.

Wallace has been on the books of Rangers since the summer of 2011 when he joined from Heart of Midlothian for a transfer fee reported by The Scotsman to be worth £1.5 million.

The 31-year-old left-back is no longer the captain of Rangers and is not part of the Glasgow giants’ Europa League squad.

Rangers legend Butcher, though, believes that Wallace still has a future at Ibrox under manager Steven Gerrard.

Butcher told The Glasgow Evening Times: “I still think there’s a future for Lee at Rangers.”

The former Rangers star added: “Yeah, he’s not the captain any more, but he’s still a good player and he’s still a player who’s worthy of being in the squad. That will be it as far as Steven’s concerned.”

Experienced footballer

Wallace is a very good and experienced left-back who, at the age of 31, has a number of years left at the very top level.

The Scotland international, though, has to fight for his place in the Rangers starting lineup this season.

Borna Barisic has been signed in the summer transfer window, while Jon Flanagan is also able to operate as a left-back.

Wallace was linked with a move away from Rangers in the summer transfer window, with The Express reporting in August that the Gers included him in a deal to sign Kyle Lafferty from Hearts.
