Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have appointed Steven Gerrard with Gary McAllister as his number two.

Terry Butcher has told the Daily Mirror that Steven Gerrard has already made a smart decision at Glasgow Rangers by making Gary McAllister his second in command.

Gerrard is set to take charge at Ibrox in the coming days, and he has looked to bring experience with him to Rangers.

McAllister, who has managed the likes of Leeds and Coventry City over his career, will join Gerrard in Glasgow.

And Butcher claims that Gerrard could be the man to turn things around at Rangers.

“I think Gary McAllister was a really good appointment. He knows Scotland well, knows the Rangers history,” the ex-Rangers man said.

“In Graeme Souness’ first game in charge, he got sent off, they lost and yet he recovered from that and did really well. I hope Stevie does not have that in his first game!

“I can’t see why he would not galvanise the club. He will attract players because it’s him. A bit like Souness did.”

Gerrard’s appointment at Rangers has created great excitement at Ibrox, with most predicting that the Liverpool man could be the right boss to take them forward.

Rangers have failed to challenge for the title since returning to the top flight, with a number of different managers struggling.

Gerrard has never been a number one before, but his playing career means that he is a high profile appointment at Ibrox.

Rangers have already made three signings since Gerrard took charge, with many more new players set to follow the Liverpool legend to Ibrox in the coming weeks.
