Arsenal are absolutely flying at the moment.
The Gunners sit at the top of the Premier League with three wins from three games, and it’s fair to say that things are going swimmingly at the Emirates at the moment.
However, of course, there’s also always room to improve, and if we were to poke any holes in this Arsenal squad, we’d probably say that they could do with some more depth up front.
Indeed, Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah are Arsenal’s only recognised senior number nines at the moment, and one injury to either of those players could really derail what has been an excellent season so far for Arsenal.
Whether or not the Gunners go back into the market for a striker remains to be seen, but, somewhat ironically, a striker they let go back in 2019 is now looking like a perfect fit for that role.
We’re talking about Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck was let go by Unai Emery back in 2019 after a hot-and-cold spell with the Gunners, but this season, he’s looked every bit a top-six striker.
He’s yet to find the back of the net for Brighton, but Welbeck has arguably been Man of the Match in all of his Premier League appearances so far this term.
His tireless running has tormented the defences of both West Ham and Manchester United, and his ability to link-up play and get the best out of the likes of Leandro Trossard and Pascal Gross has helped Brighton to two wins and a draw so far.
His pressing from the front against Manchester United was particularly impressive as he made three tackles and one interception at Old Trafford.
Against Newcastle he showed another side of his game as well, winning four aerial duels, despite the fact he was competing with the man-mountain that is Dan Burn for the afternoon.
Welbeck has always had these performances in his locker, but as he’s matured he seems to be learning more and more to play to his strengths, and with Arsenal now prioritising pressing, creativity and running from their strikers, he’d be a great fit at the Emirates and help get the most out of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
Arsenal lack depth up front at the moment, and perhaps they’d have been better off if they hadn’t let this ‘terrific’ striker leave back in 2019.
