Andy Townsend has said on talkSPORT (6:16pm, May 23, 2022) that Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy would be a “terrific” signing for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

The former Chelsea midfielder has suggested that Vardy would be a good signing for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United as well.

The talkSPORT pundit believes that Vardy would improve Arsenal with his pace even at the age of 35.

Arsenal urged to sign Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy

Townsend said on talkSPORT (6:16pm, May 23, 2022): “Someone like Jamie Vardy could improve so many teams, even at his age.

“He would be amazing for them (Arsenal), I think. I really do. I think he would be terrific for them. And Newcastle, again, even at his age.”

Unlikely to happen

In our opinion, it is very unlikely that Arsenal will sign Jamie Vardy from Premier League rivals Leicester City in the summer transfer window.

Yes, Vardy is a very good and experienced striker who has pace and is clinical, but he is 35 now.

We do not envisage Arsenal investing in a 35-year-old striker anytime soon.

The Gunners will surely want to sign one or two quality strikers who are in their early or mid-20s and at the top of their game.

Vardy, though, is a proven goalscorer who found the back of the net 15 times in 20 Premier League starts for Leicester this season.

The 35-year-old English striker scored 15 goals in the Premier League last season as well, and 23 in the league in 2019-20.

Interestingly, according to a report in The Sun in August 2021, Arsenal wanted to sign Vardy from Leicester back in 2016.

Meanwhile, The Sun are reporting that Benfica are quibbling over the £8.5 million transfer fee needed to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
