Paul Merson slammed Tottenham Hotspur transfer target, Diogo Costa, for his ‘terrible’ goalkeeping during Portugal’s quarter-final World Cup final defeat to Morocco on Saturday.

In the first half, Yahia Attiyat-Allah’s wicked cross from the left saw Portugal’s shot-stopper come off his line to collect the ball, only to catch thin air and watch Youssef En-Nesyri do his best Cristiano Ronaldo impression by rising above everybody else and heading into an empty net.

That moment proved to be very costly for Portugal because Morocco booked their semi-final ticket with France thanks to that goal.

It was a historic moment for the African and Arab nations across the world, with Morocco becoming the first African side to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.

But they will have Portugal’s keeper to thank as well, with Merson left unimpressed by his efforts, as he told Sky Sports News.

“It’s 1-0 to Morocco and it’s En-Nesyri out of absolutely nothing,” said Merson. “Ball comes in, it’s a looping cross, the keeper comes out and I don’t know what he is doing the keeper.

“He gets above the keeper and heads it into the empty net. Terrible goalkeeping. Out of nothing. Wow. Oh terrible, what bad goalkeeping.”

TOTTENHAM REALLY LIKE DIOGO COSTA

Tottenham’s number one Hugo Lloris might be balling out in Qatar, after his Man of the Match display as France knocked England out of the World Cup.

But it seems as though Spurs are looking for a replacement for their long-term servant in between the sticks.

One name that has popped up has been that of Portugal’s recently knocked-out star, with Chelsea also looking at the 23-year-old, who plays for Porto on the domestic stage.
