According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the 31-year-old was about to put pen to paper on a deal that would initially last until the end of the season with an option for a further campaign, and that may be the ideal way to get the best out of the playmaker.

Hernandez has not always found his best form since moving to Elland Road, but there is no denying that he has the quality to inspire Leeds to the run of form they need to capitalise on their current position in the Championship.
And the fact that the permanent deal that Hernandez is reportedly set to sign could expire at the end of the campaign should perhaps boost his chances of being the player that Leeds need during the second half of the season.
Had Leeds offered him a contract until the end of next term, Hernandez would have the kind of stability that would allow him to go off the boil for large periods, which he perhaps showed at the start of this season could happen.
However, the fact that the Spaniard is now fighting to have his deal extended beyond this summer means that he cannot allow any complacency to creep into his game over the coming months.
And a focused Hernandez is most definitely the kind of player that could take Leeds up to the Premier League and leave the Whites hierarchy in no doubt that the extension clause in his contract simply has to be triggered.
