Terence Kongolo has bid farewell to Huddersfield and returned to Monaco after his loan spell.
With Rafa Benitez looking to bolster his defensive options this summer, might Terence Kongolo be an option to consider?
Kongolo, 24, has just five months of Premier League football under his belt but took no time finding his feet on these shores. After joining Huddersfield Town on loan during the January transfer window from Monaco, the centre-half had an integral role in the Terriers retaining their Premier League status for another season.
But after just 13 appearances in the top flight, the Netherlands international has bid farewell to David Wagner’s side, confirming his return to parent club Monaco with an Instagram post on Wednesday.
While Monaco are yet to reveal their plans for the former Feyenoord youngster – who cost them £11.4m just last summer – there is likely to be a queue of clubs ready to take him back to England next season.
Defensive cover is a key area for Rafa Benitez to consider in the coming months and while there could be value in looking towards the likes of West Brom’s Craig Dawson and Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson – both relegated from the top flight, Kongolo could present an equally exciting option.
Having finished the season playing at left-back at the John Smith’s Stadium, the Dutchman also offers effective versatility across the backline – something for Benitez to think about with the expected departures of Massadio Haidara and Jesus Gamez.
