Garth Crooks has included Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez in his BBC Premier League Team of the Week for his performance against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the Premier League at the weekend.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward was hugely impressed by how Nunez played for Liverpool in their 2-0 win against Newcastle.

The 23-year-old Uruguay international striker scored the opening goal for the Reds in the 10th minute.

BBC pundit Crooks has admitted that he is starting to be proved wrong by Nunez.

Praise for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Crooks wrote on BBC Sport: “A few weeks ago I suggested Nunez might be suffering from stage fright especially when playing at Anfield.

“However, the Uruguayan is looking more like a real threat these days and much more comfortable in front of goal.

“His finish against Newcastle was emphatic and I now see a player growing in confidence.

“There was a moment against Newcastle when Nunez might have squared the ball to Mo Salah, and would have done six months ago, but chose to shoot and forced an excellent save from Martin Dubravka. These are all tell-tale signs of a striker starting to come of age.”

Staying patient

In our view, Darwin Nunez has what it takes to become a big player for Liverpool.

The main problem for the striker throughout the season has been his failure to take chances.

We know that the youngster has tremendous pace and is very good at running at defenders.

Nunez is a real menace to the opposition players.

However, the striker has not always taken his chances.

But, there are signs now that things are changing for Nunez in that regard.

The striker is starting to score goals now, and we believe that Nunez will eventually be a big star for Liverpool.
