Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to pin the blame on Steve Bruce, after The Athletic claimed Callum Wilson could be out until the end of October.

What’s the story?

Firstly, you might be wondering why Bruce is at fault for Wilson’s injury.

Well, it’s the 60-year-old’s fault – according to the fans below – because he left the £20m forward on against Southampton.

Bruce decided not to substitute Wilson straight away, even after it was clear the 29-year-old was struggling.

Wilson is suffering from a quad issue, which looks set to keep him out for around six weeks.

Of course, the ex-Bournemouth striker is very injury prone, so this may well have happened even if Bruce had managed him carefully.

However, it’s extremely negligent of the Magpies boss to leave his talisman on the field, even after he visibly showed signs of discomfort.

As far as the Newcastle fans below are concerned, it’s Bruce’s fault.

Who can Newcastle get to replace Callum Wilson?

To answer that question quickly, nobody.

Newcastle didn’t sign a striker over the summer. Not even Adam Armstrong, who was available for a discounted fee due to the club’s sell-on clause.

Not even Salomon Rondon was signed on a free, a deal Everton decided to go for in the end.

It’s either Joelinton or Dwight Gayle for the role, both of whom are nowhere near as prolific as Wilson is.

Even if Rondon was still a free agent, Newcastle are unable to dip into the free agent market as Bruce filled all 25 spots in his Premier League squad.

What a complete and utter mess on Tyneside – where are the goals going to come from?

Next time Wilson looks to be struggling, Bruce simply has to withdraw him.

For now, let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about Bruce and Wilson…
