Steven Gerrard has reportedly made the decision to bring in a new left-back for Aston Villa in the January transfer window.
According to the Sun, the 41-year-old head coach has ordered his scouts to find him a top left-sided fullback. With the report stating that long-term competition for Matt Targett is a priority for Gerrard.
The Villa left-back performed well over the weekend in Gerrard’s first game in charge of the Birmingham club. However, Targett remains the club’s only natural first choice player in the position.
With fullbacks taking an ever more important role in modern football, a suitable backup for Targett at left-back will likely be addressed in the January transfer window.
Indeed, Villa’s owners will likely give Gerrard some funds to bring in his own players. With the former Liverpool captain having a good record of successful transfers during his three years with Rangers.
And with the Premier League side, Gerrard will be able to flex his eye for talent much further given the scope and finances Villa posses compared to the Scottish giants.
