Emiliano Martinez may have left Arsenal last year, but there are still some fans who miss him, and his Aston Villa teammate Matt Targett’s comments about him to The Times will only reinforce their belief that manager Mikel Arteta should not have sold him.

Martinez joined Villa from Arsenal in the summer of 2020 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £20 million.

The Argentine goalkeeper left the Gunners despite playing well in the final weeks of last season, as Bernd Leno was reinstated as the first choice between the posts following his recovery from injury.

Some Arsenal fans have praised the 28-year-old goalkeeper at various stages of the season, with the Argentine superb for Villa this campaign and playing a big role in their quest to finish in the European places in the Premier League table.

Targett told The Times about Martinez: “Let’s start with Emi. He’s fantastic with the presence he gives us when he comes for crosses, the communication he gives. It makes you feel safe when you’ve got someone like him behind you. He’s such a good goalkeeper.”

Flourishing at Aston Villa

If Martinez had stayed at Arsenal this season, then he would have been a back-up and would not have played too many games.

The 28-year-old is flourishing at Villa, and perhaps he could find himself playing in the Champions League with the Villans next season.
