Rangers defender James Tavernier has told The Scottish Sun that Connor Goldson played well against Celtic at Celtic Park at the weekend.

The Gers got the better of Celtic 2-0 away from home at Celtic Park in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

Goldson is a central defender, but the 27-year-old – who cost Rangers £3 million in transfer fees when they signed him from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2018, as reported by Sky Sports – scored both the goals.

Rangers right-back Tavernier has raved about the Englishman, and so has Gers manager Steven Gerrard.

Tavernier told The Scottish Sun: “I am delighted for Connor and to get two goals at Parkhead, as a centre-back, is a great day for him.

“He should be proud of himself, he was outstanding. Every man was outstanding for us but I am delighted for him. He is a big asset for us attacking and defensively so I am really proud of him.”

Gerrard told Rangers’ official website: “It’s then about that hunger and desire to go and be a winner, and Connor Goldson has won his team three points today with two good finishes.

“I’m shocked and he is shocked! [Niko] Katic got all the credit and rightly so for a fantastic header – Connor deserves that moment today.”

Alan Thompson defends Neil Lennon

Meanwhile, Alan Thompson has defended Celtic manager Neil Lennon on Twitter following the defeat for the Hoops in the Old Firm derby.

The former Celtic midfielder has blamed the club’s chief executive Peter Lawwell instead.
