With Jan Vertonghen out of contract at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season, there is no surprise that the North London outfit are reported to be interested in Celtic central defender Kristoffer Ajer.
According to Sporten in March, Tottenham want to sign Ajer from Scottish Premiership giants Celtic in the summer transfer window.
Earlier this month, The Scottish Sun claimed that AC Milan are planning to make a move for the Norway international central defender.
While some Spurs fans will be sceptical of signing a player from the Scottish Premiership, what Ajer’s teammate Christopher Jullien has said about him will be hugely encouraging for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful.
The 27-year-old central defender wants Ajer – who can also operate as a defensive midfielder – to stay at the Hoops, and the Frenchman has said that “he can do everything”.
Jullian told The Scottish Sun about Ajer: “Kris is a great defender, and ultimately, I think he can do everything. He runs a lot, he defends, he can take the ball into the midfield and play.
“He has so many qualities, and in the time since I arrived at Celtic, I’ve seen him progress. My team-mates watched him progress before that, and he is getting better.
“But from my time here, I just saw him get more confident day by day, and that’s good for Kris and the team. If it was down to just me, I’d be keeping all of the best players beside me for as long as I can.”
Good signing for Tottenham Hotspur?
Vertonghen is 33 years of age, and the Belgium international does need replacing in the squad sooner rather than later.
Ajer is only 22 years old, and he has already got a lot of experience at Celtic, including in Europe.
At the right price, the Norwegian would be a brilliant signing for Spurs, not just for now, but in the long run as well.
