‘Team player’: Chris Brunt names the most underrated player he played with at West Brom

Speaking to the Baggies Broadcast Podcast, Chris Brunt has named Salomon Rondon as the most underrated player he ever played with at West Brom.

The Baggies have had their fair share of underrated players and unsung heroes over the years, but Brunt believes that Rondon is the one player who never got the credit he deserved at Albion.

“There’s so many that are underrated. Underrated by who? I don’t know, probably Salomon Rondon you know, strikers are judged on their goals and that was probably unfair to him and how we played as a team when he was in the team, he was up front on his own,” Brunt said.

“You were sending text messages to him telling him you’d be there in 10 minutes to support him and to just hold onto that ball, and he did it every game. He held the ball up in the corners and won set plays that got us goals because that‘s what we were good at as a team.

“I really appreciate him as a team player, and he probably got double figures in each year he was here, but as a lone centre-forward in the Premier League, people look at that and think he should’ve gotten more goals for the amount of money we paid for him, but the job he did for the team was unbelievable, and I think all of the lads appreciated that.”

Thinking about it, Rondon was rather underrated.

A striker like Rondon isn’t the most fashionable, he’s not the trickiest nor is he the most technically skilled, but he did the job that was required of him to a high standard.

The Venezuelan didn’t get the credit he deserved at the time, but in hindsight, he was a real asset, and we’re sure Sam Allardyce’s team would love a player like that right now.
