The 22-year-old winger will be a hugely important part of Rangers side next season – but how much longer after that?
In a season where most of Rangers’ bigger names and marquee signings have underperformed, the continued progression of Barrie McKay has at least offered fans some reason for optimism.
The 22-year-old may not be the most consistent performer, as his recent no-show in the Old Firm derby will attest, but on his day he is often the club’s most dangerous attacking threat and their main source of creativity.
Furthermore, with creative loanees Jon Toral and Emerson Hyndman set to return to Arsenal and Bournemouth at the end of the season, plus veteran striker Kenny Miller (below) seemingly set to depart, McKay could be set to take on an even more important role in the club’s plans next season under Pedro Caixinha.
Needless to say, therefore, Rangers need to tie him down to a long-term contract with his current deal due to expire in 2018.
According to the Daily Record, Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, who are targeting young, adaptable talents to build a team of the future, are interested in making a £6 million bid for McKay – half the price they paid Nottingham Forest for Oliver Burke last summer.
If you take potential into account, the two-goal winger is worth far more. But his contract situation means a Rangers side strapped for cash may be forced to accept such an offer rather than face the prospect of losing McKay for nothing in a year’s time.
