Steve Bruce is on the verge of quitting football after resigning as manager of Hull City, The Daily Star has claimed.
Despite being in the running for the England job before Sam Allardyce’s recent appointment, Bruce is understood to be considering his options after leaving the KC Stadium over an alleged falling out with Ehab Allam.
A return to former club Sunderland was briefly mentioned before David Moyes was given the job on Wearside, and The Daily Star claims Bruce could now be ready to bring an end to a 20-year coaching career.
The 55-year-old has never really had a break from the game since starting his career with Gillingham in 1978, and with occasional appearances as a TV pundit, Bruce may well be tempted to take a back seat.
Outlining his reasons for leaving the Tigers, who are now hotly tipped to make an instant return to the Championship this season, Bruce insisted he had no choice but to leave the club.
In an open letter picked up by the BBC, he said: “My biggest regret is having to walk away from Hull, but it was a decision I had to make for the sake of the club.
“The last 12 months have been very tough and it felt like the right step for the club to move forward in a different direction and with someone else in charge.
“I desperately wanted to make it work this summer and to be a Premier League manager again. Sadly, it wasn’t to be but I’ve left Hull City with some fantastic memories.”
Attention on Humberside now turns to Bruce’s successor, with Neil Warnock and Roberto Martinez among the names in the frame.
