QPR manager Hasselbaink isn’t thinking about promotion this season
Queens Park Rangers manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says the club cannot get too preoccupied by talk of a promotion challenge ahead of the new Championship season, Get West London has reported.
Hasselbaink’s men begin the new campaign with a home fixture against his former club Leeds United on Sunday, but the Dutchman is keen to stress that he will not be setting any overly ambitious goals for his team, who finished 12th in the Championship last term.
According to Get West London, Hasselbaink said: “It’s very easy to say we want top six or to get promotion. We are concentrating more on doing it.
“The objective is to be competitive in every game and to get stronger during the season.”
All four of QPR’s summer arrivals – Ariel Borysiuk, Jordan Cousins, Joel Lynch, Jake Bidwell – have been brought in as part of the manager’s attempts to strengthen the defensive capabilities of his side, but Hasselbaink is keen to make further additions before the end of the transfer window
He added: “We would hope there will be a few more in. We are looking and are trying very hard.
“We need a little bit more help. We want to make that squad a little bit stronger so we can be more competitive.”
With the departures of Matt Phillips and Junior Hoilett earlier in the summer, Hasselbaink may well be in the market for some attacking reinforcements over the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, QPR have been given approval by London mayor Sadiq Khan to build 605 new homes as part of the site of their proposed new 40,000-capacity stadium, in a move the club hope will bring their vision for a new ground one step closer to reality.
