Taylor Fritz told one area of his game could be the key to more wins over Carlos Alcaraz

Taylor Fritz fell to the Spaniard at the ATP Finals after taking the opening set.

In a hard-fought contest, Carlos Alcaraz battled back from a set down to defeat Fritz 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, moving to 2-0 in the Jimmy Connors Group.

The win also extended Alcaraz’s record against Fritz to 5-1 and marked his third tour-level victory over the American this year.

Speaking on Tennis Channel Live, former doubles standout Rennae Stubbs weighed in on what Fritz needs to change if he wants to shift momentum in future meetings with Alcaraz.

On social media, Stubbs pointed out exactly what she feels Fritz needs to do if he wants to consistently compete at the highest level.

“If Taylor [Fritz] learned how to volley better, he would win these matches,” she said. “It’s the one thing he just doesn’t do well enough to beat players like this in majors.

“He may win today, but over five sets, if he could get comfortable and competent at net, he really could win a major.”

Given the current state of the game, taking home a major trophy usually means having to get past either Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner. And that’s not great news for Fritz when you look at his record against both players.

The last time Fritz got a win over either player in an ATP Tour event (excluding the Laver Cup) was back in 2021.

From 1989 to 2003, there was at least one American man who won one of the four Grand Slam titles each year. But since Andy Roddick’s US Open win in 2003, no American man has been able to get over the line and lift a major trophy.

Taylor Fritz came closest 12 months ago, reaching the final in New York, but fell short against Jannik Sinner.

Fritz reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, falling to Alcaraz in a four-set match. A win would have set up a rematch with Sinner from their US Open final a year earlier.

There’s hope he’ll take that extra step in 2026 and return to another Grand Slam final. Maybe then he can end America’s long wait for another men’s singles title.
